Limits

  • The anonymous surface does no legal work. All six tools we verified handle signup and API-key recovery. Contract review, matter tracking and downloads require credentials we do not hold, so their parameter schemas and safety annotations are not published here.
  • US-only signup. The sign_up schema requires a billing city, state and ZIP, and its description scopes signup to the US. Autonomous signup is also optional — General Legal notes that if the signup tools are absent, the feature is disabled for that deployment.
  • Uploads cap at 20 MiB, across DOCX, PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG and Markdown only. General Legal describes larger-file support as planned separately, not shipped.
  • Links expire. Upload links last about an hour and download links about fifteen minutes. download_contract has to be called again once its URL lapses.
  • Turnaround is hours, not seconds. A human attorney reviews every matter, so a matter opened in conversation will not resolve inside that conversation.
  • Downloads need a released version. A matter must reach ready_for_review or closed before download_contract will return anything.
  • API-key recovery is irreversible. Completing it revokes every previous key on the account.
  • Anthropic's listing flags legal documents as the sensitive data type, and General Legal's stated permissions cover creating matters, uploading documents, messaging the attorney team and downloading attorney-prepared files. Grant it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for anything involving a matter. General Legal's README lists a portal account with an active organization, a General Legal API key, or autonomous-signup access as the requirement. Without credentials the server still answers, but it exposes only its six signup and recovery tools — every contract and matter tool stays behind sign-in until you authenticate.

It never puts the file in the model's context. General Legal's own agent skill states that file bytes never pass through tool arguments and instructs agents not to read, encode or transcribe the document. Instead the upload tool returns a first-party upload link valid for about an hour, which you open in a browser or send the file to with curl.

A few hours to one business day, which is General Legal's own stated typical turnaround. Every matter goes through AI analysis and then review by a human attorney, and complexity moves the number. General Legal tells agents not to poll in a tight loop and to check matter status when the user asks or when substantial time has passed.

DOCX, PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG and Markdown, up to 20 MiB each through the current MCP upload flow. General Legal's README names larger-file support as planned separately, so anything above that ceiling has no route through the connector today. A matter can hold several documents, and each document can carry multiple versions as it is negotiated.

It shows a new key exactly once, at the end of signup or recovery. General Legal instructs clients to store it in a secret manager rather than in prompts, logs or source files, and never to send an API key and OAuth credentials together. Recovery is the sharper risk: completing it revokes every previous key on the account.

Because the server splits its surface by credential. General Legal documents that an unauthenticated session sees only the signup and recovery tools, and that OAuth or API-key authentication unlocks the matter tools. Our anonymous handshake on 2026-09-08 confirmed it: six tools returned, all of them signup and key management, none of them contract work.
