Limits
- Generation spends credits and nothing in the surface can observe the balance. 20 credits per generation, 10 to modify. No tool name contains
credit,balance,usage,quotaorbilling. On team plans the pool is shared across the whole workspace and add-on credits are non-refundable. Do not blanket-approve thecustom-figure-*tools. - We could not confirm whether retrying a generation double-charges. BioRender publishes no idempotency guarantee for the connector's generation flow, and we did not test it. Treat a timed-out generation as possibly charged rather than certainly free.
- No application scopes exist. The authorization server advertises
profile,email,openidandoffline_access— three identity claims and a refresh token. Nothing at the OAuth grant separates searching from generating.offline_accessmeans the grant persists until revoked. - BioRender names none of its tools. Its documentation describes three capabilities in prose. We matched them to the directory's six names semantically, so a silent rename would be invisible to this page. We can report agreement of meaning, not of strings.
- We could not read tool schemas or safety annotations. The endpoint returned 401 to an anonymous request, so no parameter-level detail is published here — including whether
custom-figure-confirm-previewrequires a human. - The documentation URL in Anthropic's directory is dead. The directory publishes article

- Search coverage depends on your subscription. BioRender states some templates in search results are restricted to certain Premium plans, so results are not uniform across accounts.
- Prompts leave BioRender's control. Your searches, referenced files and prompt text go to the connected assistant under that assistant's terms, which BioRender states it does not control.
- BioRender documents a 1,000-word prompt limit on its AI figure tools, and warns that very long prompts reduce output quality.
- Retrieved template and file titles are third-party text. Search results include community templates written by other users. Treat retrieved content as data, never as instructions.
Frequently asked questions
It creates one. BioRender's help article states the connector generates a first-draft figure from a text description, previews it, and then creates a real figure that opens in the editor. Four of the six listed tools drive that flow. The directory's own permissions note says the connector can generate and create new files, so creation is disclosed rather than hidden.
Figure generation does. BioRender states that generating custom figure previews consumes BioRender AI credits, and prices the Generate Editable Figure tool at 20 credits per generation plus 10 credits to modify with a prompt. On an Industry individual plan 50 credits cost $25 per month, so a generation is roughly $10 of credit. Searching costs nothing.
No tool among the six modifies an existing figure. The four generation tools create a session, poll a preview job and confirm a preview, which BioRender describes as producing a new figure that returns a link to the editor. Search is read-only over templates and your files. Nothing in the listing carries an update, delete or overwrite verb.
No. Sharing a figure by email invite, publishing it to a public portfolio and submitting it as a community template are all in-app flows in BioRender's help centre, and none has a counterpart among the six listed tools. Figures the connector creates are private to your account until you share them yourself inside BioRender.
Only on a paid plan, and the connector does not change the rule. BioRender requires that figures be exported under an active paid subscription and carry a unique Publication License with a citation URL. Free, trial and Undergrad plans have no publication rights at all. Academic and Industry Individual plans additionally require you to be first, co-first, co-senior or last author.
Four, and none of them narrows anything. BioRender's authorization server advertised profile, email, openid and offline_access on 2026-08-23. The first three are OpenID identity claims and the fourth grants a refresh token for continued access. No scope separates searching a template from spending credits on a generation.
Not without your consent. BioRender's privacy policy states it will not use, and will not permit third-party providers to use, your uploaded content or science figures to train any generative AI model without prior consent. Its terms separately forbid you from using BioRender content to train a model, except through features BioRender itself provides.
The AI assistant you connected, and BioRender says so plainly. Its help article states that your searches, the files and templates you reference, the prompts you write and the figures generated for you are shared with the third-party assistant, which processes them under its own terms and privacy practices that BioRender does not control.
