Limits
- Pro or Business plan required. Other plans are refused with a named error message.
- Canny Ideas must be enabled, independently of the plan.
- An Owner must connect first. Until then, Managers and Contributors cannot authorise their own connectors.
- Tool access varies by role, so two teammates on the same workspace may see different capabilities.
- Some clients need a client ID and secret, not just the URL — Cursor, Microsoft Copilot, Devin and several GitHub Copilot variants.
- We did not read the tool surface. The endpoint requires OAuth and Canny's article describes capabilities rather than listing tools, so the 61 count is Anthropic's and no tool names appear on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Pro or Business. Canny states that teams on other plans see the message Current plan does not support MCP connectors when they try to connect. There is a second prerequisite that is easy to miss: Canny Ideas must be enabled on the workspace, and the server will not work without it even on a qualifying plan.
Because no Owner has connected it yet. Canny requires the first connector in a workspace to be set up by someone with the Owner role. After that, any teammate can authorize their own connector, including Managers and Contributors. If you are a Manager and cannot connect, that first Owner setup is usually the missing step.
No, the tools follow your Canny role. Canny states that the tools available to each person track their role permissions, so a Contributor can read data, create Ideas, and edit Ideas within the fields their role allows. The connector inherits your existing permissions rather than granting a uniform set.
No, and Canny frames that as the point. It describes the server as letting you build AI-powered tools that operate on your Canny data without sharing your API key directly. Authentication is OAuth: we confirmed the server issues an OAuth challenge and publishes RFC 9728 metadata naming api.canny.io as its authorization server.
Canny names ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, Devin, ClickUp, Canva, Missive and Runlayer. Claude, Claude Code, Codex and GitHub Copilot in VS Code need only the server URL. Cursor, Microsoft Copilot, Devin and some Copilot variants additionally need a client ID and secret.
Canny lists three jobs: pulling structured feedback data into AI workflows, automating tasks like summarizing, querying, deduplicating and analyzing feedback, and building custom tools over Canny data. The structured data it names includes Groups, MRR, Insights and opportunity values, so this reaches revenue context, not just post text.
