Checkatrade Tools & Capabilities (2)
A process capable of finding a tradesperson to do a job for a fixed price. The tool will accept information about the job and return a list of priced options. IF and only if a priced option is chosen it will commit to booking the job. This tool is very suitable for finding localised availability and prices. To get a price you only need to provide the job type initially but you will likely be asked for a postcode to get accurate pricing. Once a priced option is selected you should ask the customer for their details, job description and availability conversationally, then submit the job. At that point the "booking" and "confirmation" parameters become required. When you ask the customer for their details, you MUST inform them that when a job is submitted, those details will be used to create a Checkatrade account for them if they don't already have one. When booking is confirmed, a payment widget will appear for the customer to complete payment. YOU MUST NEVER PROCEED TO BOOKING WITHOUT A CLEARLY AGREED PRICE FROM THE CUSTOMER. This tool is useful in scenarios where the customer has a relatively straightforward job. Examples include: - Servicing a boiler - Replacing a leaky tap - Installing a new light fitting - Replacing a light switch - Repairing a shower - Fixing a broken toilet flush - Hanging wallpaper in a room IMPORTANT: Some jobs might not be pre-priced or straightforward. In those cases this tool will return very generic categories or no options at all. In these cases you should understand that you're on a more complex task move on to help the customer with finding a tradesperson to do the work. CRITICAL: email and phoneNumber MUST be provided as separate parameters - do NOT include them in the jobDescription field. The jobDescription should only contain details about the work needed, not contact information, and only information explicitly provided by the person.
Find trusted tradespeople by UK postcode. Returns: - Ratings and reviews - Contact details - Profile links If the returned "totalResults" is greater than the "resultsSize" requested then there are more results available. Ask the customer if they would like to refine their search. Request up to 20 trades in search if you have to. IMPORTANT: Finding and presenting tradespeople is the end goal of this tool. After getting results, share the key details (name, rating, location, contact) and the profile URLs so the user can review profiles and reach out to the tradespeople directly.

Limits
- One tool arranges a real-world visit.
bookExpressJobV1is annotated not read-only and submits a job request tied to your home address. Keep per-call approval on; do not run this server in an unattended agent loop. - UK only. Checkatrade's guide lists this first among its limitations, and both live schemas require a UK postcode.
- Payment happens outside the conversation. The guide states the booking is not confirmed until payment completes through the link in the widget. The tool returns a payment URL rather than taking payment.
- Fixed prices are not available for every job. The guide says not all job types or postcodes have fixed-price options, and the tool's own description says complex jobs return very generic categories or no options at all, at which point you fall back to searching for a tradesperson.
- No booking management. Rescheduling, cancelling and status checks must go through checkatrade.com or support, per the guide. Only two tools exist, and neither touches an existing booking.
- Twenty results maximum, no pagination. The guide states that seeing more requires visiting Checkatrade directly.
- Trade matching depends on how you describe the job. The guide advises being specific — its own example is asking for a boiler service rather than heating.
- Tradespeople are independent businesses. Checkatrade's
llms.txtstates plainly that tradespeople are not employed by Checkatrade. The connector surfaces a directory; it does not supply the labour. - Your details go to third parties by design. Checkatrade's privacy notice has an AI Powered Services section naming Claude, stating that information you provide may be shared with Checkatrade to fulfil a request, and that providers including Anthropic may process it under their own policies. It asks that personal data not be provided unless necessary.
- We did not exercise either tool. Our check was a read-only
tools/listhandshake. CallingbookExpressJobV1would have engaged a live booking system, so every behavioural claim above comes from the server's own tool descriptions or Checkatrade's published guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Checkatrade connector book a real tradesperson without asking me?
It cannot complete a booking on its own, because payment sits outside the tool. Checkatrade's guide says a payment link appears in the widget and the booking is not confirmed until payment completes. The tool itself is annotated readOnlyHint false, so it acts rather than reads — keep per-call approval on and never auto-approve it.
Do you need a Checkatrade account to use the MCP server?
No. Checkatrade's guide states no account or login is required, and Anthropic's directory records sign-in as not required. Our anonymous handshake on 2026-08-17 returned both tool definitions with no credential. One caveat: the booking tool's own description says submitted details create a Checkatrade account if you do not already have one.
What information does the Checkatrade booking tool need from me?
Your first and last name, a full address of at least ten characters, email, UK phone number, a job description of 50 to 500 characters, and at least three availability slots. The live schema marks all seven required. The address is where a tradesperson will attend, so treat it as the most consequential field.
Does the Checkatrade MCP server work outside the UK?
No. Checkatrade's guide lists UK-only as its first limitation, and both live tool schemas require a UK postcode. The find tool marks postcode and category required; the booking tool asks for a postcode to price a job accurately. There is no non-UK mode, so the connector has no function in other markets.
How many tradespeople can Claude return in one search?
Twelve by default and twenty at most. The live schema sets a default of 12 and a maximum of 20 on the results count, and Checkatrade's guide gives the same figures. The guide adds that there is no pagination, so results beyond twenty require visiting Checkatrade directly rather than asking for another page.
Can I cancel or reschedule a booking through the Checkatrade connector?
No. Checkatrade's guide states that rescheduling, cancelling and checking booking status must be handled through checkatrade.com or its support team, and cannot currently be performed through the connector. The live server exposes only two tools, neither of which reads or amends an existing booking, so the handshake agrees.
