Limits
- No inference about jobs is available, in either direction. The server's instructions say the data supports no inferences about job risk, displacement, or reassurance about jobs. It cannot show that a profession is threatened, and it equally cannot show that one is safe. Any sentence of the form "[occupation]s are using Claude for X" overstates what was measured.
- Availability distorts geography. Claude is not offered in every country, and Anthropic's September 2025 report records that in accordance with international sanctions its services are unavailable in Crimea, Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia. Absence of usage in a geography is not evidence about that geography.
- The Anthropic Usage Index does not exist everywhere. It is published for countries and US states only, and Anthropic's September 2025 report notes it cannot be calculated for territories without World Bank working-age population data.
econ_index_list_subregionsranks other countries' subregions by usage share instead — volume, not population-adjusted engagement — and explicitly tells the model never to invent an index for them. - Nulls are suppressions, not zeros. econ_index_get_dataset_overviewsays so directly. Historical comparison belongs to the published research reports and the release archive, not to a single connector call. No tool declaresidempotentHintand releases are periodic, so record the period a figure came from alongside the figure. - Coverage is uneven by design. Anthropic's data documentation shows country-level rows carrying only
pctfor the detailed O*NET, request and occupation breakdowns, with the full metric set available at global level and at coarser hierarchy levels. Not every metric exists at every geography. - The classification is machine-made. Conversations are labelled by classifiers rather than by people — Anthropic's June 2026 report states transcripts are only read by another instance of Claude. The January 2026 report describes these measures as directionally accurate rather than precise, which is the right expectation for any single number.
- No tool writes anything. All nine are annotated read-only, and the union of their input parameters contains no credential, account identifier, free-text body or upload field. The connector cannot contribute data, correct a figure, or affect anyone's Claude usage.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Anthropic Economic Index connector show which jobs AI will replace?
No, and the dataset cannot answer that question. It matches conversation content to job tasks catalogued by O*NET, not users to jobs. A high figure for accounting tasks means conversations resembled accounting work, not that accountants were present. The server's own instructions state the data supports no inference about job risk or displacement in either direction.
What is the Anthropic Usage Index, and what does a value of 2 mean?
It is a geography's share of observed Claude usage divided by its share of the working-age population aged 15 to 64. A value of 1 means usage proportional to population. A value of 2 means twice the usage that population share alone would predict. Anthropic publishes it for countries and US states only, and calls it the Anthropic AI Usage Index in its research reports.
Does the Economic Index connector need a sign-in or an API key?
No. We opened an anonymous handshake against the endpoint on 2026-08-17 and it returned all nine tool definitions with no credential. The host publishes no OAuth protected-resource descriptor, returning 404. Anthropic's directory records the server as authless with a no-auth posture, and the underlying dataset is published openly under CC-BY.
What does a null or empty value mean in Economic Index results?
It means the figure was not published, never that the measured value was zero. Anthropic's data documentation states plainly that a missing row means the cell was not published, not necessarily that the value is zero. Cells are withheld when a geography falls below the sample floor or the aggregation threshold, both of which exist to protect privacy.
Whose data does the Economic Index connector return, and can I download it?
Anthropic's own. It measures Claude usage from anonymised, aggregated Claude chat and Cowork conversations, so Anthropic both built this connector and produced the dataset. The full data is published openly on Hugging Face at Anthropic/EconomicIndex under a CC-BY licence, currently 664 MB across seven releases, with the code under MIT.
Can the Economic Index tell me about AI adoption beyond Claude?
No. Every figure describes observed usage of one product. Anthropic's foundational paper says its methods paint a picture of AI usage on a single platform. Claude is also unavailable in some countries and sanctioned regions, so those geographies show no usage for reasons that have nothing to do with demand for AI there.
Which Economic Index tool should an agent call first?
Call econ_index_get_dataset_overview once at the start. It returns the latest data period, the snapshot timestamp, coverage counts, the worldwide headline split and a definitions glossary, so the agent knows what period it is quoting before it quotes anything. From there, econ_index_get_global_usage answers worldwide questions and the list tools supply valid region codes.
