Frequently asked questions
Is the Bigdata.com MCP connector read only?
No. Anthropic's directory sets this connector's permissions field to Read Only, but the same listing includes bigdata_upload_document, which Bigdata documents as writing text into your private corpus and indexing it. The write is inward — it adds your own material to your own account — but a reader who took Read Only to mean nothing can change would be wrong.
What does bigdata_upload_document actually do?
It saves UTF-8 text into your private Bigdata.com corpus and queues it for enrichment and indexing. Bigdata's reference documents four parameters plus an optional share_with_org flag that defaults to false. The call returns immediately with a processing status, and the document becomes searchable only once indexing finishes. Binary files cannot go through this tool.
Are documents I upload through the connector shared outside my firm?
No. Bigdata's privacy FAQ states uploaded documents are logically separated and usable only by people from your own firm. The share_with_org parameter widens access to your organisation and nobody beyond it. Bigdata's pricing page adds that private content is never used for model training, and its privacy FAQ says no user data trains large language models.
Does the Bigdata.com MCP connector cost money to use?
Yes. Bigdata bills per token, and the connector consumes two of its three metered token types. Search and tearsheet tools draw Content Retrieval tokens; bigdata_upload_document draws Private Content Storage tokens. Bigdata states the MCP connector does not consume Agent Model tokens because it never touches the Research Agent or Workflows.
How do I check my remaining Bigdata credits or quota?
Query the subscription quotas endpoint with an API key. Bigdata's monitoring guide documents a subscription_type field that returns either credits or quota, so organisations sit on one of two billing shapes. A separate credits balance endpoint returns the remaining balance in US cents. Neither check is reachable through an MCP tool.
Which tools work on my Bigdata subscription?
It depends on the content packages your organisation licenses, not on the tool list. Bigdata says it holds licences with providers of different tiers and prices content accordingly. Sections like mergers_acquisitions inside the company tearsheet require a separate FactSet subscription that Bigdata support must enable against your organisation before the data appears.
Can I add users to the Bigdata.com connector myself?
No. Bigdata's authentication documentation directs you to contact its support address to add or remove users from your organisation, and asks for a list of user emails even after enterprise SSO is configured. An administrator adds the connector once in Claude organisation settings, then each user connects individually and signs in.
What OAuth permissions does the Bigdata.com MCP server request?
One scope. Its RFC 9728 descriptor advertises openid alone, which is an identity claim rather than a permission over financial data or uploads. Bigdata's authorization server is a Clerk tenant that supports six scopes in total. No advertised scope separates reading market data from writing a document into your corpus.
