Does the Brex MCP server only read data?
No, despite the Read label on its directory listing. Brex's own developer documentation lists 43 tools, five of which modify data — updating expense memos, uploading receipts, replacing attendees, assigning card expenses to a spend limit, and starting a download job. Anthropic's directory snapshot names only 10 of the 43. The label describes the listed subset, not the server.
Can an ordinary employee see the whole company's user directory through Brex MCP?
Yes, for people data. Brex's documentation marks list_users, get_user_by_id and list_users_by_name_or_email as All users access, alongside departments, locations, titles, legal entities, cost centres and roles. Money data is gated separately by capability. So a non-admin can enumerate colleagues and org structure, but not their expenses, cards or bank balances.
Does Brex MCP inherit my existing Brex role and permissions?
Yes. Brex states that the server uses your existing credentials and respects the role-based permissions already configured, so the assistant sees only what your user account may see. Its tool table assigns each tool an access level, from All users up to Account admin or Card admin. The connector adds no permissions your seat does not already carry.
Can Brex MCP issue a card, move money or approve an expense?
No. Brex's developer documentation states plainly that approvals and card management are not yet available through MCP. No tool in its published list creates a card, changes a spend limit amount, initiates a transfer or approves a reimbursement. Brex directs those actions to the Brex dashboard or mobile app instead.
What does an admin have to do before employees can connect Brex MCP?
Two one-time steps, both admin-only. An account admin or card admin must accept the Developer API agreement under Settings then Developer, and enable Brex in AI assistants under Settings then Beta features. After that, Brex says any user in the account can connect with their own credentials and reach tools their Brex capabilities allow.
What OAuth scopes does the Brex MCP server request?
Nineteen, published in the server's own OAuth protected-resource document. Sixteen are read-scoped across users, cards, budgets, travel, banking, vendors and accounting. Three are not: openid and offline_access are identity and refresh scopes, while expenses.card and expenses.bill are the write-capable variants in Brex's scope vocabulary, which has separate readonly counterparts.
Is my Brex data sent to Anthropic or OpenAI when I use the connector?
Yes, in the ordinary sense that your queries and the responses pass through the assistant. Brex states that when you use Brex in Claude your queries and responses are processed by Anthropic under your organisation's Claude plan and Anthropic's data retention and privacy policies, and says the same about OpenAI for ChatGPT. Brex points you to those agreements for retention details.
Why does the Brex MCP server show a beta or early access label?
Because Brex labels it that way in both of its own documents. The developer page carries a Beta notice saying the tool set may change as Brex develops new use cases, and the support article marks Brex MCP as Early access. Brex also notes the Claude connector was last updated in May 2026 and tells users to refresh the tools list.
