Limits

  • Research use only, and Basecamp says so first. Outputs are model predictions, not experimental results. Basecamp states nothing produced through the connector should inform medical decisions, clinical diagnoses or patient care, and that candidates must be validated in the lab. Its terms go further, barring use in any diagnostic product, any therapeutic or treatment purpose, any clinical decision-making, and any human-subjects research or in-vivo administration, and disclaiming any representation that outputs comply with FDA, MHRA, EMA or EU MDR/IVDR frameworks. Basecamp states this restriction is additional to, and does not limit, the NonCommercial one.
  • Outputs are NonCommercial and are not yours. Basecamp retains title to generated sequences, the licence is revocable, ShareAlike reaches any model fine-tuned on the outputs, and patent filing or regulatory submission requires a commercial licence agreed in advance. This is the single most consequential limit on the page.
  • The tool names cannot be verified against the vendor. Basecamp's documentation names no tool. Every match is semantic, so a rename would be invisible to us and to any reader.
  • We could not read tool schemas or safety annotations. The endpoint returned 401 to an anonymous request, so no parameter-level detail is published here and the dispatcher check rests on documentation rather than on schemas.
  • One scope, and it constrains nothing. use:mcp names no object and no verb, so consent cannot separate scoring a sequence from deleting a dataset. There is no boundary between the routine call and the destructive one.
  • AMP generation is one strain per request, from a fixed list of eleven, and predicted MIC applies to that strain only. Basecamp states it implies nothing about other strains, toxicity, stability, manufacturability or broad-spectrum activity.
  • Immunogenicity input rules are narrow and unforgiving. Natural nucleotide CDS only — no amino-acid, codon-optimised, back-translated or partial sequences — 150 to 8,192 nucleotides, in-frame, forward strand. Up to 5 inline or 100 valid sequences per dataset call, 100 MB per file.
  • Model reliability varies by organism. Basecamp states bacterial and viral antigens are best represented in training data and that lower reliability should be assumed for other organisms, and that real-world performance may differ from the 0.85 AUROC benchmark.
  • Results are not comparable across checkpoints. Basecamp states scores are tied to a specific model checkpoint, so results from a different checkpoint or software stack are not directly comparable. Record the date of any score you keep.
  • Deletion is manual and incomplete. Basecamp states deletion requests are processed manually and may not remove data immediately or entirely from backup and archival systems, and that anonymised derived data may be retained indefinitely.
  • Biosecurity records outlive your account. Flagged-activity and reporting records are retained for up to eight years, and erasure rights are expressly limited against them.
  • No usage visibility. No tool reports credits, quota or rate-limit headroom, while Basecamp reserves the right to throttle or suspend at its discretion and publishes no numeric limit.
  • The Terms of Service are effectively unpublished. We found them only through the site's WordPress media API; no page on basecamp-research.com links to them, and the documentation PDF refers to "the applicable Terms of Service" without a URL. A user could accept them at OAuth consent without ever having been shown a path to them.
  • The terms contain a numbering defect. Two consecutive clauses are both numbered 6.4 — one on retained rights, one on generated sequences — which makes the licence's most consequential clause awkward to cite unambiguously.

Frequently asked questions

No. BaseData is the training corpus behind the model, not a queryable surface. The two generative tools take a strain name or your own nucleotide sequence, and the four dataset tools handle files you uploaded yourself. No tool name, and no capability in Basecamp's documentation, retrieves a collected gene, species record or sampling location.

Basecamp Research does. Its Terms of Service state that no ownership or title passes by virtue of your having generated a sequence, and that you receive only a revocable NonCommercial licence. Synthesising or selling that peptide, or filing a patent claiming it, each require a separate written commercial licence agreed in advance.

It applies to what you submit, not to what you receive. Basecamp's Terms make you warrant that your inputs do not violate laws governing access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing, naming the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol. Basecamp's own collection permits cover BaseData upstream and impose no separate obligation on you.

Not by design, but it is not prevented. Basecamp states the service is not a repository for patient or clinical information, while conceding it may not technically prevent such data being submitted. Its privacy notice separately anticipates human microbiology reports and clinical materials among uploads, and applies GDPR Article 9 conditions to them.

Yes, and screening results can be reported to authorities. Basecamp screens submitted and generated sequences against curated reference databases, applies know-your-customer checks, and may report flagged activity with logs, sequences and your identity to law enforcement or export-control bodies, without prior notice, and does not rely on your consent to do it.

No. Basecamp's Terms state NonCommercial use is permitted without charge, and the connector exposes no billing, credit or quota tool. But Basecamp reserves the right to impose rate limits, quotas, query ceilings and concurrency limits at its discretion, and no tool in the surface lets an agent read its remaining allowance before spending it.

Less than the name implies. It removes a dataset you uploaded, but Basecamp's privacy notice states deletion requests are processed manually and may not result in immediate or complete removal from backup or archival systems. Biosecurity screening records covering flagged activity are retained separately for up to eight years.

Exactly one, and it draws no boundary. The server's RFC 9728 descriptor declares a single scope named use:mcp, which names no object and no verb. Granting it grants whatever the server implements, including the peptide generator and the delete tool. The Auth0 authorization server behind it advertises only OpenID identity claims.
