Query Morningstar fund data, analyst research and screeners from an AI agent. Morningstar documents seven read-only tools; Anthropic's directory lists six. A licensed Morningstar account is required, and OAuth grants identity scopes only.

Verified connector

Listed by Anthropic as a partner connector in its Connectors Directory.

Connection checked by Agentman on .

Anthropic states this reflects the level of review a connector received, not a security audit.

Limits

  • A licensed Morningstar account is mandatory. There is no free or trial tier documented for the MCP server, and your licence determines which securities and data points are reachable.
  • The directory undercounts the tools by one. Anthropic lists six; Morningstar documents seven. morningstar-portfolio-analysis-tool is missing from the directory snapshot.
  • OAuth scopes are identity-only. offline_access, openid, email and profile describe who you are, not what the connector may reach. No consent choice separates one tool from another.
  • We could not read tool schemas or safety annotations. The endpoint returned 401 to an anonymous request, so no parameter-level detail or readOnlyHint is published here.
  • The AI-use and storage terms are not public. No Morningstar document we reached addresses using content as AI input, vector stores, embeddings, retention, or deletion on termination. Silence is not permission — resolve it against your licence agreement.
  • Research has no history. Only the latest published report and notes are available per investment, and reports appear within roughly 24 hours of publication.
  • Article coverage starts in 2022, and Morningstar warns that source timeliness may significantly affect accuracy.
  • X-Ray benchmarking is fixed to the S&P 500 and cannot be customised, per Morningstar's documentation as of April 2026.
  • Analyst research does not cover every fund type. Morningstar documents fund coverage as open-end funds, closed-end funds and ETFs, and Medalist pillar analysis for open-end funds and ETFs only.
  • The screener is unreliable on qualitative fields. Morningstar states it works more reliably with quantitative data points, and that lookup-mapped data point IDs constrain what can be screened.
  • No usage or billing tool exists. An agent cannot observe its own consumption, while Morningstar counts tool calls per user.
  • No rate limit is published for the MCP server. We found no documented request ceiling, throttle or Retry-After behaviour, so treat concurrency as unspecified rather than unlimited.
  • The nominated documentation URL renders nothing to a non-browser client. See Sources.

Frequently asked questions

Morningstar documents seven; Anthropic's directory lists six. The directory omits morningstar-portfolio-analysis-tool, which Morningstar's own tool page describes in full as an X-Ray analysis tool. Both lists agree on the other six names character for character, so this is a stale directory listing rather than a rename or a hidden surface.

No. All seven documented tools retrieve information — data points, research reports, articles, screener results, fund holdings and portfolio analytics. Morningstar's directory entry records the permission as Read, and no documented tool carries a write, create, update or delete verb. The portfolio analysis tool analyses holdings you supply; it does not hold or alter an account.

No, and Morningstar says so directly. Its terms state that Morningstar does not provide investment advice and does not endorse buying, selling or holding any financial product. The connector returns ratings, fair value estimates and analyst text as information. Any decision made from that output is yours, and a language model can misread or misattribute the figures.

Only identity ones. The server's RFC 9728 descriptor advertised offline_access, openid, email and profile on 2026-08-23, and its authorization server advertises the same four. None names a data operation, so consent cannot separate reading research from running a screener. Your Morningstar licence, not the OAuth grant, decides what data you reach.

Yes. Morningstar's documentation states plainly that a licensed Morningstar account is required to connect and use the server. Its tool page adds that securities and data points must be part of your licence to be reachable. Without a licence the endpoint returns an authentication failure, which we confirmed on 2026-08-23.

Morningstar publishes no per-call rate, and describes enterprise pricing rather than metered billing. But it told shareholders it tracks monthly tool calls per user, so calls are counted even when they are not separately priced. No MCP tool reports your own usage, so an agent cannot check its consumption before or after a call.

Morningstar's published terms do not address it, so the answer is in your licence agreement rather than on any public page. No Morningstar document we reached mentions vector stores, embeddings, AI training or a purge obligation on termination. Its public user agreement does restrict redistributing content without written consent. Ask your account representative before indexing.

Investment data covering more than 200,000 global securities, per Morningstar's tool documentation. That spans 1,300+ data points as of July 2026, analyst and quantitative research reports, editorial articles from 2022 onwards, top fund holdings for ETFs and mutual funds, screener results, and X-Ray portfolio analytics benchmarked to the S&P 500.
