What the Scholar Gateway connector does
The Scholar Gateway MCP server connects Wiley's peer-reviewed journal collection to Claude, Le Chat and any MCP-compatible agent. One semantic search tool answers a research question from over 8 million articles and returns citation metadata with DOI links. Sign-in is OAuth through Wiley's CONNECT identity service, and the surface is read-only.

Limits
- Wiley content only, today. Wiley states the connector "provides access to Wiley content only" and that other publishers will be added. Over 8 million articles from more than 2,000 journals is a large corpus but not the literature — a systematic review cannot be completed here.
- No OAuth scopes exist.
scopes_supportedis absent from both the resource descriptor and the authorization server metadata. Nothing separates one kind of access from another at consent. On a single read-only tool that costs little, but the boundary is not there if the surface grows. - We could not read tool schemas or safety annotations. The endpoint returned 401 to an anonymous request on 2026-08-23, so no parameter detail, response shape or annotation is published here. The read classification is from Wiley's documentation and the directory.
- How much article text comes back is undocumented. Wiley says passages and citation metadata, never full text, and publishes no schema or length cap. Open the DOI rather than assuming the agent read the paper.
- No images, charts or multimedia. Wiley states the connector processes text content only, so figure-dependent questions return incomplete answers rather than failing visibly.
- The connector may not fire on its own. Wiley advises naming Scholar Gateway or asking explicitly for scholarly sources, because some queries do not trigger it.
- The free trial ends 2026-08-31, eight days after this check. Wiley gives no successor terms for trial users, so confirm access before building a workflow on it.
- Capacity limits are real but unpublished. Wiley attributes connection failures to a "service traffic threshold" and advises retrying in a few minutes, without stating any rate, quota or retry header.
- Wiley's own documentation host answers every path identically. Every URL we probed on
docs.scholargateway.ai— includingrobots.txt,sitemap.xml,llms.txtand a nonsense control path — returned the same 21,961-byte page on 2026-08-23. The page is genuine and server-rendered, but the host publishes no second page and no robots policy, so there is nothing further to read there. - Official client support is narrow. Wiley names Claude Pro and Le Chat as officially supported and describes other MCP clients as still being tested.
- Multi-publisher licensing is unresolved. When other publishers join, their terms govern their content. We found no document stating how differing publisher terms will be surfaced to a user at query time.

Does the Scholar Gateway connector return the full text of Wiley articles?
Wiley does not say, and the distinction matters. Its documentation states the connector retrieves passages by meaning and supplies complete citation metadata and DOI links, but never uses the words full text. Passage retrieval sits between an abstract and a whole article, and Wiley publishes no schema showing how much of one comes back.
What OAuth scopes does the Scholar Gateway MCP server request?
None are published. Both the RFC 9728 resource descriptor and the authorization server metadata omit scopes_supported entirely on 2026-08-23 — the field is absent, not empty. Nothing at the consent screen narrows what the connector may reach, though with one read-only search tool there is little for a scope to separate.
How many tools does the Scholar Gateway MCP server have?
One. Anthropic's directory lists a single entry and Wiley's own documentation names one supported operation, semantic_search, so both sources agree on the count. That single tool takes a natural-language research question, which means the count bounds the interface rather than the range of literature it can reach.
Do I need a subscription to use Scholar Gateway with Claude?
Yes, either an institutional subscription or the free researcher trial. Wiley states the trial runs through August 31, 2026 and requires a valid institutional affiliation and an active research role. An anonymous request to the endpoint returned HTTP 401 on 2026-08-23, so nothing works without CONNECT credentials.
Do Wiley's terms allow feeding its articles into an AI assistant?
Its general Terms of Use forbid it, and the connector is the exception Wiley itself grants. Those terms bar using AI tools to ingest, process or generate output based on Wiley content, naming third-party plugins as a covered route. Scholar Gateway is Wiley licensing that use through a controlled product, not permission you may assume elsewhere.
Can the Scholar Gateway connector change or delete anything?
No. The single tool is a search, Anthropic's directory records the connector's permissions as Read, and Wiley's documentation names no operation beyond semantic_search. There is no record identifier to modify and nothing that creates, updates or deletes. Wiley also publishes no writes it has held back from the listing.
Does calling Scholar Gateway cost money or consume credits?
No single call spends anything metered. Wiley publishes no per-call price, credit balance or quota, and access comes from a subscription or trial you already hold. No tool reports usage either, but with nothing consumable per call there is no runaway spend an agent could cause.
Why does Claude not use Scholar Gateway when I ask a research question?
Because Wiley says some queries do not trigger it automatically. Its troubleshooting page tells users to specify that they want scholarly resources, or to name Scholar Gateway in the prompt. Wiley lists this among current limitations it is working to improve, alongside coverage limited to its own journals.
